隨著技藝的不斷提昇,宋代的緙絲用途更為廣泛,除了裝裱用的緙絲製品產量增加外,工藝家嘗試將繪畫藝術融入緙繡工藝上,純藝術欣賞性的作品達到鼎盛,山水、花鳥、人物等皆可製作。除此之外,又以蘊涵吉祥或神話題材作為祝壽或饋贈的禮品,如〈宋緙絲八仙拱壽〉、〈宋緙絲紫芝仙壽〉等,皆甚受喜愛,數量增多,題材多元豐富。到了南宋時期,佛教、道教宗教題材亦逐漸加入緙絲製作的行列,宋代佛與菩薩造像傾向世俗化,平易近人,塑像既不失莊重,又富人世情感,創造出秀婉典雅的風貌。此幅藍地設色緙絲佛像即其中精品。 圓光中,釋迦牟尼佛結跏趺坐在蓮花臺座上,蓮花寶座,共分四層,色澤沈穩。坐佛頂成肉髻相,臉形略圓,五官柔和安祥,神情莊嚴肅穆。身著袒右肩赭紅色袈裟,衣褶流暢,雙手仰放於腹前,兩拇指的指端相接,稱為禪定印,相傳釋迦牟尼佛在菩提樹下,即以此坐式入定悟道。緙絲人物的五官、肌膚最難表現,此件作品粉本精工細致,織工技巧純熟,如佛像的頭部、手、腿,比例寫實合宜,線條流暢,緯線之分色細膩自然,散發佛陀莊嚴神韻,可為宋代緙絲佛像藝術品的代表。
