  唐太宗（626-649在位）為秦王時，府中蓄有十八位文官參謀，登基後命宮廷畫師閻立本（活動於七世紀後期）繪製圖像。據推測最早的十八學士圖像，應與凌煙閣功臣圖相似，即人物成排站立且無背景描繪，旁邊書寫身份識別與讚語。本幅採取此古老圖畫形式，但畫絹以及用筆皆顯示應為明代之後所作。
