Dwelling in the Fu-chun Mountains is a landscape masterpiece from the museum’s collection. Not only does it depict the Fu-chun River, it also portrays the ideal landscape for Huang Kung-wang. Can the styles of landscapes by masters around the world be compared stylistically? What kind of paintings would be created, if Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Claude Monet (1840-1926), and Vincent van Gogh (1853- 1890) had visited the Fuchun River? This section presents immersive theatre "Impressions of Fu-Chun" to initiate a stylistic discourse across the centuries and distance. Using an artificial intelligence technology called the Adaptive Instance Normalization (AdalN), the styles of Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh is learned to subsequently allow a computer to "paint" the Dwelling in the Fu-chun Mountains in the styles of these European masters. Digital technology has allowed a stylistic encounter of the East and West beyond the constraints of time and space. In addition, this section applies AI technology to aesthetic education with the aim to facilitate learning in stylistic appreciation. Featuring Cézanne's mountain and rocks, Huang Kung-wang's riverside and Van Gogh's starry night. "The Illusive Landscape" is an on-site immersive set design, where a fantastical and fictional landscape has been digitally constructed. With innovative projection methods, the sceneries move and interchange to combine and contrast the light, texture, colors and details created by the four artists, and thus presenting to the audience the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western landscape painting.

  • Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (Wu-yung Version)

    • Huang Kung-wang (1269-1354), Yuan dynasty (1279-1368)
    • Handscroll, ink on paper 33 x 636.9 cm

"The Master Wuyung Scroll" version of Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains is composed of six joined pieces of paper and measures more than six meters in length. The first section of paper has traces of damage where repairs were done. Suffering from fire in 1650, the first part of the scroll was cut off (and now is in the Zhejiang Provincial Museum collection). The painting features layers of brush and ink, the landscape forms outlined and washed with great variation. The mountain shapes throughout the scroll range from rounded ones up close in layers stacked to the back to gently rolling slopes and banks, and even lofty peaks, revealing a rich variety to the landscape pattern. This handscroll painting not only represents scenery of reclusion in Fuchun, it even more so reflects Huang Gongwang's idealized image of the landscape transformed through his exploration of nature.
