Weigh anchor! NCCU students are launching a "mini" naval battle via their well-designed board games. Let us take the Tong-an ships on a voyage back to the adventure and excitement of 19th century maritime history.

Brave the Wind and Waves: Board Game Demo

Designed by four students from the NCCU Department of Education, this game aims to reenact the confrontation between merchants, pirates, and the imperial navy. Players are able to better grasp the history and utilization of Tong-an ships through playful and stimulating interaction.

Prototype of "Brave the Wind and the Waves"

As the Tong-an ship board games were originally designed for tutorial sessions in class, the designers initially used a poster-sized map to visualize the contemporary worldview, while bottle-caps represented the Tong-an Ships, and wind blown through plastic straws served as the force propelling the boats. The final deliverables not only maintain the educational feature of the original version, but also further enable a pure-for-fun "recreational mode". Revisit the creation of the game by comparing the prototype and the modified demo.

Tong-an Ship Board Game Workshop Documentary Film

In April 2017, the NPM's Department of Education, Exhibition and Information Service and the NCCU Transartistry Project co-organized a four-day workshop of board game designing, which resulted in 7 different board games about the Tong-an ships. The participants shared their works with elementary students from schools in remote areas and the Affiliated Experimental Elementary School of NCCU.
