Color illustrations
Originally titled “Illustrations of Taiwan’s Administrative Infrastructure,” Illustrations and Descriptions of Reconstructed Buildings in Taiwan Prefecture, now housed in the National Palace Museum, is a collection of hand-painted illustrations and descriptive texts documenting key infrastructure projects undertaken by Prefect of Taiwan Jiang Yuanshu (1739–1781) during Emperor Qianlong’s reign. The collection includes 39 illustrations and 40 descriptions (one of which is titled “Record”), for a total of 79 entries, each pairing an illustration with its corresponding description. During his tenure, Jiang actively promoted the construction of public facilities and reinforced local defenses. His efforts included the restoration and rebuilding of government offices, schools, temples, bridges, salt warehouses, burial grounds for the destitute, and almshouses; the fortification of city walls; and the construction of watchtowers, dormitories, lighthouses, stone embankments, barracks, and military arsenals. His substantial contributions to Taiwan’s development are well-documented in this collection. The content of the collection extends beyond Taiwan Prefecture’s capital city, covering major construction projects in Taiwan County, Zhuluo County, Changhua County, Fengshan County, Tamsui Subprefecture, and Penghu Subprefecture. The National Beiping Library acquired this collection between the years 1933 and 1934.
