An achievement from the encounter of technology, art, and history, NPM Painting and Calligraphy 4G New Media Art Exhibition ─ New Waves of NPM: The Taichung Cultural and Creative Industries Park Travelling Exhibition combines some of the National Palace Museum's most popular new media art installations created in the past years with digital works of art newly produced in 2016. Made possible by collaborate effort of the National Palace Museum, the Taichung Cultural Creative Park and the City University of Hong Kong, this exhibition uses kinect motion sensors, 4K high resolution displays, virtual reality, along with other emerging technologies, to reinterpret and re-present the NPM's art and artifacts. The exhibition challenges the relationship between art and technology, analyzing art with the tools of scientific research and developing technology from an aesthetic sensibility. Such an exhibition will lead the development of future new media art in Taiwan.

The installation situated at the entrance is the large wall projection titled The Emperor's One Hundred Horses and The Cold Food Observance. Further within, exhibition items are organized dynastically. The first exhibit, A Dance Between Ink and Brush, is inspired by Autobiography, a calligraphic text written by the Tang dynasty monk Huai-su, the history and transition of Chinese character and calligraphy is presented as well. Lotus in the Gentle Wind, the second exhibit, juxtaposes new media art installations, such as Summer Lotus, with reproductions of Song dynasty landscape paintings. The next exhibit, Dream in Qiao and Hua Mountains, simulates virtual landscapes of Jinan with using VR virtual reality service. The fourth exhibit, A Taste of Daily Life, allows visitors to take a peek into the leisure activities of court ladies, officials, and scholars. Finally, the last exhibit, Traversing the Universe, invites visitors to wander the universe depicted on the ancient map, Kunyu Quantu. Powered by 4G high speed wireless internet, this exhibition not only showcases NPM's successful application of technology to the arts but also provides a visual feast of the museum's collection highlights.
