The Painting’s Details

In the background is a corner of a garden, in which white cranes roam while surrounded by fine trees and strange rocks, thus creating an elegant scene. A fine mist partially hides the treetops from view, imparting a sense of the vertical elongation of space. Though the work is unsigned, the figures are rendered with fluid, energetic lines and the color palette is elegant and refined. Together against a backdrop of delicately depicted trees, rocks, and household articles, the work is likely by a 13th-century Southern Song court painter.
