The National Palace Museum is home to treasured collections of artifacts. To a greater extent, it is a depository of collective memories spanning millenniums. In 2025, the Museum is celebrating a significant milestone: the centennial of a transformative journey from an imperial collection to a museum for all since its inception in 1925, the 75th anniversary since the artifacts were moved into the storehouses in Beigou, Taiwan, and the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, the permanent home for the precious artifacts. The year 2025 also marks the 10th anniversary of the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum. To commemorate these meaningful occasions, the Museum is presenting Enduring Legacy: A Centennial Celebration of the National Palace Museum. With the momentum nourished for a century, the exhibition is a retrospective of the path the Museum has treaded in Taiwan in the past six decades. It is also an outlook into the infinite possibilities the future holds.

The “Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden,” one of the most famous legends in Chinese cultural history, is said to have been a grand get-together held in the Northern Song capital of Bianjing (modern Kaifeng) that was attended by such literary and artistic luminaries as Su Shi (1037-1101), Huang Tingjian (1045-1105), Li Gonglin (1049-1106), Mi Fu (1052-1108), and Wang Shen (ca. 1048-1104). Though modern scholars have concluded that the meeting likely never took place, for many centuries, this romanticized event involving famous literati was passed down and became the prototype for scholarly gatherings through the ages.

To protect national treasures, the National Palace Museum collection was relocated southwards after the Mukden Incident, arriving in Taiwan in 1949 and temporarily stored in Beigou, Taichung. Despite difficult conditions, the artifacts were organized, preserved, researched, and published, later being opened to the public in 1957. In 1965, due to Beigou’s remote location, the Museum was moved to Waishuangxi in Taipei, where new facilities were constructed. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the collection’s relocation to Taiwan, the Museum published The Beigou Legacy, documenting the early relocation process and the dedication of those who safeguarded the artifacts.
