The History and Geography of Yuan Dynastic Administrative Regions

The History and Geography of Yuan Dynastic

  • Jianyang Academy imprint of 1297-1307
  • 9.5 x 15.5 cm

The author of this book, which is divided into three chapters, is unidentified. However, he/she is believed to possibly to have taken part in the compilation and editing of the "Complete Gazetteer of the Yuan," from which he/she received information about all the provinces. If such an assumption is true, he/she published book after abstracting and editing the "Complete Gazetteer of the Yuan." Unfortunately, the first edition was lost. However, it was included in Liu Yingli's "New Edition of Complete Matters by Category" and "New Edition of All Matters by Category" from the Yuan dynasty. This particular imprint is from the former.

Based on a system of direct administrative regions and provinces, the areas described here are further divided into circuits, seats of government, and prefectures.

Somewhat similar to Zhu Mu's "Topography Book of Scenic Areas" from the Song dynasty, the names, history, traditions, scenic areas, and famous officials of each division are recorded. This book also includes 14 maps, which are rare among Yuan topographic illustrations.
