The Western Artist's Alternation

Extensions of a No-Place

Peter Nelson uses landscape as storytelling medium, where stories combine personal experience with many layers of historical tradition. Extensions of a No-Place is an imaginary world that Peter Nelson makes usingdrawing, film, sculpture and text. Within this realm, he explores how traditions of landscape painting, poetry and storytelling influence how we see the physical environment. Nelson looks at Utopian urban architecture, literati scroll landscapes, the 18th century English picturesque movement, and real time strategy computer games such as Starcraft. He uses these diverse traditions to consider the type of imaginary worlds we create, and how they influence the world that we build around ourselves.
